Quotes and good stuff...
Bry talking about O'Keefe's artwork "One man looked at some paintings... and said, 'Why should I buy a painting for $50,000 when I can buy ITT stock and get an income?' I told him to buy the stock. Why should I sell a painting to someone like that?"
Stieglitz "Freedom is necessary to sincerity." about O'Keefe.
Stieglitz again "Do you ask what the wind means? You might as well ask what life means. If an artist could explain his work in words, he wouldn't have had to create it. And remember, your attitude toward a picture may alter, but the picture itself won't."
O'Keeffe "I'm one of the few artists, maybe the only one today, who is willing to talk about my work as pretty." she said. "I don't mind it being pretty. I think it's a shame to discard this word; maybe if we work on it hard enough we can make it fashionable again."
O'Keeffe describing the frustrations she felt as a woman and as an artist:
" I grew up pretty much as everybody else grows up and one day seven years ago found myself saying to myself - I can't live where I want to - I can't go where I want to - I can't do what I want to - I can't even say what I want to -. School and things that painters have taught me even keep me from painting as I want to. I decided I was a very stupid fool not to at least paint as I wanted to and say what I wanted to when I painted as that seemed to be the only thing I could do that didn't concern any-body buy myself - that was nobody's business buy my own. So these paintings and drawings happened and many others that are not here. - I found that I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say in any other way - things that I had not words for. Some of the wise men say it is not painting, some of them say it is. Art or not art - they disagree."
